Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament Trivia
The lake on the edge of the green on the 18th hole of the the Majlis Championship Golf Course has become the grave of many wayward golf balls.- In 1997, Ian Woosnam misjudged his shot and it ended up in the lake. He eventually lost the Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament title to Richard Green.
- In 2001, none other than the world’s most famous golf player, Tiger Woods, fell victim to the treacherous Dubai Desert Classic odds on the final hole of the Majlis. He fired his third shot straight into the looming water feature, conceding the competition title to Thomas Bjorn.
- The main sponsor for the Dubai Desert Classic Golf Tournament is Dubal Dubai Aluminium. Other sponsors include Omega, Samsung, Emirates, National Bank of Dubai and Jumeirah Golf Estates.
- The site for the golf course was donated by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Majlis Championship Golf Course was designed by Karl Litten, an architect from Florida. The first competition, played in 1989, was called the Karl Litten Desert Classic to honour the golf course designer. The first tournament was won by Mark James, an English player.
- The 1990 contest was named the after the main sponsor - Emirates Airlines Desert Classic.
- In 1995, PGA European Tour players voted the Emirates Golf Club as their favourite championship golf course.
- A handicap of 28 for men and 45 for ladies is required is required by the Emirates Golf Club.
