World Number 10 Paul Casey says he is determined not to fall by the way side as his fellow Europeans surge up the World Rankings ahead of next week’s Open Championship (Casey 33/1 to win the Open).
A year ago, Casey sat third in the World Rankings having won three times on tour and appeared to be on the verge of winning his first major title.
However, Casey’s form in the last year has dipped due to a rib problem and he hasn’t won since May 2009, while his fellow Europeans have picked up numerous wins on both sides of the Atlantic.
In recent years, America has been an unhappy hunting ground for British golfers but this year alone in Ian Poulter, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose twice and Graeme McDowell all have all won on the PGA tour, with the most impressive being McDowell’s victory at the US Open.
And now Casey is looking to get back onto top form ahead of this year’s Open Championship at the ‘Home of Golf’ St Andrews.
“I very much want to emulate what the others have done. I am knuckling down and I’ve increased my focus and my workload just to make sure I’m not getting left behind,” said Casey.
Casey missed the cut the last time the Open was at the Old Course in 2005 but the Englishman still has fond memories of the venue.
“I partnered Tony Jacklin and Greg Norman in the first two rounds. That was a treat, but unfortunately I didn’t play very well and missed the cut,” he added.
“I did, though, get a chance to see Jack Nicklaus make his farewell, so that was pretty.”
