7324481 300x234 Karlsson join Wales absentee listEuropean Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has been hit by the news Robert Karlsson is the latest potential member of his team to pull out of next week’s Wales Open at Celtic Manor – the venue for October’s clash with America (Europe 8/11, USA 11/8, Tie 9/1 – Ryder Cup).

Montgomerie was hoping that the majority of players who are likely to line up for Europe would take the time out to play at the tournament which will be hosted on Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten course in order to get a feel of it ahead of the Ryder Cup in just over four months’ time between October 1-3.

However, Karlsson’s decision not to play follows on from Padraig Harrington’s withdrawal to undergo knee surgery, while Europe’s top four Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Rory McIlroy will also be absent.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who admitted this week that his form is not worthy of a wildcard pick for the team, is also going to miss the Wales Open so will have to try and impress Montgomerie with a positive showing at next month’s US Open (Garcia 50/1 Outright).

“Ideally I’d like all 30 candidates to play but that is impossible,” Montgomerie told BBC Sport.

“I managed that all, bar Sergio at the PGA Championship at Wentworth last week, and if the Wales open was the week after the PGA I think more people would have stayed on.

“But because it is two weeks after, the players tend to disperse to wherever they are from in the world and some of the potential team live in Florida.

“But I’m quite happy that some of them have changed their schedule to accommodate the Wales Open and that is a very positive thing for the European Tour and the team.”
